DALLAS,
Texas - The International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) in a CAP
cadet’s mind is usually associated with a visit to a new country, seeing
new sights, and meeting new people. This is definitely one of my
personal future goals in CAP, but this year my family had an interesting
perspective on the IACE program.
From
Friday, July 25th until Sunday, July 27th my
family hosted two cadets from the United Kingdom’s Air Training Corps,
the Civil Air Patrol equivalent to the Royal Air Force. Hosting the
cadets was a very memorable experience, mostly talking with them about
diversities between the UK and the US. It was also fun to do things such
as exchange iPods to see what kind of music they listen to and visit a
Wal-Mart where they had never seen a store so big.
We
joined them in enjoyable activities like a Frisco Roughriders baseball
game, and a tour of the city of Frisco’s fire department, police
department, etc. We also attended an FC Dallas Soccer game (football to
them) where the cadets from UK were excited to see David Beckham play.
Overall,
having these cadets at our house for just three days was one of the
highlights of my year. It was something I will always remember because I
had no idea the UK was so unlike the US in some ways, but the same in
other ways I had never thought of.
