One of the three missions of Civil Air
Patrol is emergency services. GSARSS (pronounced GSARS) is a high speed
very intensive training program designed to provide cadets with
extensive emergency services training resulting in a fully qualified
ground team member.
Physical training, classroom instruction,
and field experience is what the Ground Search and Rescue Specialty
School brings to the cadets and seniors of Texas Wing. This school
is different from NESA or NGSARS, in that Texas Wing GSARSS focuses not
only on the Ground Team, Urban DF, and Ground Team
Leader qualifications, but also creates an
environment whereby cadets and seniors are pushed to their limits and
beyond in order to prepare them to be of service to their Community,
State and Nation.
Basic GSARSS is
designed to cater to those looking to get GTM 3. It is possible to earn
GTM 2 while there, but only if some of the GTM 3 requirements have been
completed. Basic First Aid and CPR certifications are received as well.
Advanced GSARSS attendees must have a
minimum of GTM 3 to attend the school, however it is more to their
benefit if they have attended Basic GSARSS, and/or have some or all
sign-offs within GTM 2. It is possible to earn UDF, GTM 1, and even GTL
while at AGSARSS. The bonus is that you receive GREAT firsthand training
that will prepare you to return to your unit and complete your sign-offs
as a competent ground team member.
Advanced GSARSS completes the American Red Cross certification in
Introduction to Disaster Services, Shelter
Management, and Damage Assessment, and
trains from the SARTECH-II curriculum. At the end of the week, students
are put through the National Association of Search and Rescue (NASAR)
written and practical exams in an effort to earn the SARTECH-II rating,
a nationally recognized SAR classification.
DISCLAIMER: Not all attendees of GSARSS
or AGSARSS will receive all of the certifications we offer our students.
What you put into the school is what you get out of it.
